Representative Jim Costa

Rep. Costa Headlines 2010 Jefferson Jackson Dinner

On Thursday evening, August 12th, the Fresno County Democratic Women's Club held it's annual Jefferson Jackson Dinner at Pardini's Restaurant in Fresno's Fig Garden District. The featured speaker for the evening was House Member Jim Costa, who represents California's 20th District.

The intended speaker had been State Controller John Chiang, but he had to bow out at the last minute due to the developing situation involving exorbitant city salaries and the effort to bring some transparency to the issue. The ongoing situation regarding the failure of republicans in the State Legislature to come to an agreement on the state budget led to the absence of our second featured speaker, Senate Majority Leader, Dean Florez.

Present and speaking were several Democrats running in this November's election including Fran Florez, Michael Esswien, Chris Parker, and Carole Laval.

Interesting Reading...

Remember way back during the Reagan Administration, a fellow named David Stockman? He was the OMB Director who before congress proposed classifying ketchup as a vegetable as part of Reagan's budget cuts for federally financed school lunch programs.

Well, he's back with an op-ed in the NY Times, that is being characterized as, "How the GOP Destroyed the American Economy". In reality it's entitled the,

Four Deformations of the Apocalypse

Seems that Mr. Stockman, a former darling of the right wing, budget guru has acquired religion, seen the error of their economic ways. Check it out by clicking the title above.

Atty. Gen. and Dem Candidate for Gov. Jerry Brown

Jerry Brown takes on Meg Whitman!

Early this month, Democratic Attorney General Jerry Brown officially launched his campaign for Governor. In a video on his website, Brown declared, "...what we need is someone with insider's knowledge but an outsider's mind".

Celebrity CEO and GOP candidate for Governor, Meg Whitman spent a whopping $27.2 million in the first 11 weeks of 2010, setting a new record for campaign spending in the state. For her money, she has surged ahead of opponent Steve Poizner by a margin of 49 percentage points in the latest Field Poll. The same poll shows that she spent her way to a virtual tie with Jerry Brown, 46 percent to 43 percent.

Jerry Brown is certain to win the June 8th Democratic Primary and is wisely saving his funds for the General Election battle in November. Meg Whitman will have to write her campaign another huge check to cover expenses through June 8th as she is down to only $4.5 million in cash as of last week.

US Sen. Barbara BoxerWelcome to Election Year 2010!

There are many elective offices up for grabs this year. Prime among them are the Senate seat now held by Barbara Boxer and the entire slate of statewide offices. Arnold is termed out (good riddance!), his popularity having dropped to an all low in this, the most ungovernable state in the union.

Coming up first is the June 8th primary, with incumbent Boxer as a shoe-in for the Dem side and Celebrity CEO Carly Fiorina as the front-runner for the Republicans.
AG Jerry Brown
In the Governor's race, Jerry Brown (as yet unannounced) is expected to take the nomination after the departure from the race of Gavin Newsom and John Garamendi, who won a seat as the 10th District Representative to Congress in November.

Obama Chooses New NASA Administrator

President Obama's selection Saturday of former astronaut Charles F. Bolden Jr. to head NASA gives a boost to the agency's manned space program and its stated goal of returning humans to the moon by 2020.

During the presidential campaign, Obama had seemed lukewarm toward NASA and its hugely expensive human spaceflight program. Space enthusiasts were particularly worried after Obama staffers floated the idea of taking money from the agency to fund domestic programs.

President Speaks to Notre Dame Grads

SOUTH BEND, Indiana (Reuters) - President Barack Obama urged both sides in the abortion debate on Sunday to pursue a "fair-minded" discussion as he sought to quell a firestorm over his invitation to speak at Notre Dame, a premier U.S. Catholic university.

Notre Dame's decision to confer an honorary degree on Obama and invite him to be the keynote speaker for the commencement sparked petitions and several days of protests. Some students vowed to boycott the commencement.

But the speech itself drew mostly cheers, applause and standing ovations.
